Videos about “AI training jobs” tend to promise big hourly rates for easy remote work. Some of that is true. Much of it depends on who you are, which project you get, and how many unpaid steps come first.
This guide looks at four platforms that were recently promoted online: Pila8, Luel, Alignerr and Pasiflora AI. It separates what is advertised from what independent sources report, and covers the risks that rarely get mentioned.
Why this work exists
AI systems still need people to record voices, check answers and judge quality. That demand is why the sector is growing. One market estimate quoted by a review site puts data annotation tools at about $1.0 billion in 2023, rising to about $5.33 billion by 2030. In June 2025, Meta was reported to have paid roughly $14.3 billion for about a 49% stake in Scale AI, a data-labelling company.
So the demand is real. What matters for you is the pay, the access and the reliability.
At a glance
| Platform | Type of work | Pay claims found | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pila8 | Voice recording, evaluation | About $6/hr average on one directory; $10-30/hr on a job listing | Mixed, sources disagree |
| Luel | Audio and video data collection | No published rate found | Low for pay; funding reported |
| Alignerr | Expert review and AI training | About $80/hr average on its homepage, $25-120/hr in example listings | Medium |
| Pasiflora AI | Expert review (medicine, STEM, finance, law) | $35-250/hr advertised bands | Advertised only, early stage |
Type 1: voice and video data collection
Pila8
Pila8 is backed by Y Combinator through its parent company, BeSimple AI, and focuses on audio recording plus some evaluation and red-teaming work. A directory listing describes base pay of $0.10 per minute of approved audio and typical sessions of $5-$15, working out to roughly $6 an hour on average. It also says the platform is active in Nigeria, India, Kenya and other markets. That directory has very few reviews, so treat its numbers as a rough guide.
A separate job listing for English solo recording advertises an estimated $10-$30 an hour. The gap is large. Likely reasons are different projects, languages and approval rates. Only approved audio is paid, so rejected clips mean unpaid time. (verify on Pila8’s official site)
Luel
Luel describes itself as a marketplace for rights-cleared audio and video training data. Press coverage reports a roughly $31 million seed round and says contributors are paid within 24 to 48 hours. A software listing mentions payouts through services such as Venmo or Stripe, which may not be available in every country, so check payout options for your location before you start. We found no published hourly rate, so any number you see quoted is unconfirmed. (verify on Luel’s official site)
Type 2: expert review
Alignerr
Alignerr says it is powered by Labelbox. According to one review, its homepage cites an $80-an-hour average, while its example listings are more varied: about $25-$30 for a language expert, $30-$40 for a writing generalist and $40-$120 for search-quality and AI training roles. Another tracker lists a lower $15-$60 range.
Pay structures also differ by project: per task, per accepted task, or per hour of media. Some projects need an AI interview or a subject test. If pay depends on accepted tasks, rejected work is unpaid. (verify on alignerr.com)
Pasiflora AI
Pasiflora advertises some of the highest bands. A review reports the published ranges as $120-$200 for medicine, $100-$180 for law, $80-$250 for STEM and engineering, $80-$160 for finance, $60-$140 for research, and $35-$120 for other fields.
The same review advises treating it like any early-stage platform, and notes that a generalist without credentials would be competing for a smaller pool of work on a platform with no track record. Published bands tell you the ceiling, not what you will be paid. (verify on the official site)
Three risks that rarely get mentioned
1. Unpaid steps. Platforms in this space commonly require unpaid assessments or interviews before paid work. Class actions filed in a California federal court against Scale AI and others alleged that workers recruited on promises of $25-$40 an hour were paid for only about half the hours they worked, partly because training time went unpaid. Those are allegations reported by a review site; read the primary court records if you plan to cite them.
2. Uneven work. Contributors on several platforms report weeks with no tasks, and gig-work trackers have reported account suspensions and project removals on some platforms. Don’t plan your rent around one platform.
3. Scams. Fake job offers imitate real platforms. The Better Business Bureau lists fees to unlock withdrawals as a red flag and has reported that task-scam complaints more than doubled in 2025. A genuine platform will not ask you to pay to apply or to withdraw. Apply only through the official website, never through a WhatsApp or Telegram message.
Should you try it?
- You have professional expertise (medicine, law, finance, engineering, coding): expert platforms may be worth an application, but expect screening.
- You are a beginner or a generalist: expect lower rates, more rejected work and longer gaps.
- You want voice work: check which languages and accents each project wants, and keep your recording setup quiet and consistent.
A safe way to start
- Apply only through each platform’s official site.
- Never pay to apply, to get tasks or to withdraw.
- Track your unpaid time (assessments, training, rejected work) and calculate your real hourly rate.
- Use a separate email address for gig platforms.
- Spread your time across more than one platform.
Frequently asked questions
Is $250 an hour realistic? It is an advertised upper band for narrow specialist roles at one early-stage platform. It is not a typical rate.
Do I need to pay to join? No. A legitimate platform does not charge you to apply.
Can I do this from India? Some platforms say they operate in India, but eligibility and payout methods vary by platform and project. Check each official page.
Is this a full-time income? For most people it is not. Work availability varies, and unpaid steps reduce your effective hourly rate.
